When I was at a Western Washington Men’s basketball varsity practice one year, I met a player who was red shirting because he was recovering from a knee injury. As I was watching him shoot, I noticed that he held his breath when he shot.
It turned out that this player was the son of my knee doctor so I told my doctor about his son holding his breath when he shot.
To make a long story short, his father told his son about what I said and his son said something to the effect that “what does breathing have to do with anything.” His father thought that his son just was not interested in doing anything with his breathing when shooting. However, a few days later, his son told him that he had tried exhaling when he shot and found that he could hardly miss when he did it.
