OK, I lied. This may not be #1 on the list, but this basketball shooting fundamental is one that is never taught by anyone else and it is an extremely important skill to master. And, yes, there are other important basketball shooting techniques that will lead you to excellent basketball shooting. These and more you will find in my book Becoming a Zen-Sational Basketball Shooter, but this one is at the top.
So, what is this secret? It is how you breathe when you shoot.
It is OK if you don’t believe me. Just work with it and then tell me it doesn’t work big time. Of course, you need to breathe correctly and I will give you the basics later in this blog, but to get all the details, you will only get it in my book.
What is the big deal with breathing?
OK, we all breathe when we play basketball and when we are shooting, don’t we? Or do we?
I am willing to bet that you have not thought about how you breathe when you shoot. I will go farther and say that many of you (if not all) actually hold your breath when shooting. Especially when you are driving to the basket and you have five opposing players in your face trying to keep you from scoring.
If you will do an exhale just before you release the ball, you may just see a huge improvement in your ability to make baskets.
Let me tell you a story. I was at a Slams basketball game a while back when they were playing a team from Olympia. As I was watching the best player on the team shoot free throws, I noticed that he was exhaling as he was shooting. I then watched him when he was shooting the other shots and he also exhaled as he shot.
After the game, I asked him if he exhaled consciously or was this something that he just did by accident. He said that he did it consciously and that he worked on this concept in practice. He told me that working on his breathing was extremely important to him and helped him immensely with his play.
So, if working on your breathing when shooting is important to one of the best player on this semi-pro team, I am hoping that you will see if you can make it work for you.
I will say that most of my students say that it is difficult to do when playing. Please don’t let this interfere with you working on it.
In a nut shell here is how you need to breathe. You will start a relaxed exhale just before you release the ball and you keep this exhale until your ball gets to the basket. And when you combine this with focusing on the rim properly, following through with your arm properly, being relaxed properly, and having the proper mental environment, it all leads to Zen-Sational Basketball Shooting.
